What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation that occurs naturally through focused attention. While in this trance-like state, your unconscious mind is highly receptive to new perspectives and ideas. Through the use of imagery and positive suggestions you can see and experience your desired future state, making it easier to achieve on a conscious level. Therefore, hypnosis is highly beneficial for realizing any kind of behavioral change as well as obtaining greater mind/body awareness and control. Hypnosis is a powerful technique, which helps you achieve change quickly.

What Is Self-Hypnosis?

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis so in each session with your hypnotist you are training yourself in achieving your own trance state. Hypnosis does not involve someone else controlling your mind. The hypnotist simply helps facilitate this process with you.

What is Ericksonian Hypnosis?

This method of hypnosis is attributed to Milton H. Erickson, an American psychiatrist who believed that the unconscious mind was both creative and solution generating.  He also believed that a trance was a common everyday occurence.   We all go in and out of trance states as we listen to music, or read a book or are engaged in physical activity.  These states are so common to us that we do not consciously recognize them as hypnotic phenomenon.  Yet, it is in these states that the unconscious mind is most receptive to suggestions.

Another distinguishing factor is his “indirect approach”.  Where traditional hypnosis is authoritative and often met with resistance, Erickson’s approach is permissive and indirect often using metaphors, symbols, story telling and contradictions.  An example of an authoritative  suggestion would be “You are going into a trance” a direct command which could be obeyed or ignored as opposed to the indirect suggestion such as “You can comfortably learn how to go into a trance”.   The indirect suggestion  is  vague, an invitation to fill in the gap with your own unconscious understanding and it is less likely to create resistance in the subject.
